Stop Six

The Gaol Wall

This stop marks the location where the old Gaol wall and turret once stood. In 1879, Captain Moonlite and five other men used this wall to escape from Ballarat Gaol. Scott began his escape by digging into Plunkett’s cell, removing the mortar between the bricks. Once inside, Scott and Plunkett dismantled the iron door and lock.

The other escapees were George Scott, James Stapleton, John Dermoody, William Marshall, and William Taylor. After breaking out of their cells, Scott and Plunkett overpowered the guard, Irwin, and tied him up in the exercise yard. Irwin later managed to free himself and raised the alarm.

The six prisoners then scaled the wall using two benches and strips of blankets, avoiding the guard tower. Captain Moonlite was captured on Tuesday, August 19, when he took refuge in a hut near Bendigo. He was one of the last to be arrested. According to the Ballarat Star on June 21, 1872, Moonlite claimed he planned the escape and considered the others inexperienced. His capture came after a young boy knocked on the hut door for his billy. When Captain Moonlite opened the door, he was seized by Sergeant Drought, Constable James Bradley, and detectives.
